Sam - 22

Cont...

A month passed. Things had gone back to relatively normal with the exception that Tony and Steve were now in constant communication. Bucky went back to Wakanda and Wanda returned from her vacation. Nat was still unaccounted for.

But that didn't matter right now. Not as Sam stood in front of a modest house in sunny Greece the whitewashed wall almost too bright to look at.

Avery and he had reconciled and today, today was the day he was going to meet Riley's son.

Max looked over from the gate as though to ask if he was ready. Sam gave a curt nod and tried to understand his emotions at that moment. The guilt was there, it always would be. But the weight was lighter now as was the pain and sadness. It would never heal, only alleviate over time. He'd realized he didn't mind it long ago. It was a memory, a curve in his story.

Max opened the gate and stepped into the courtyard, Sam following. "Honey I'm home!" Max hollered.

That had come as a surprise, Max, and Avery though in hindsight it was blatantly obvious. They did well together and strive to be the best parents they could be.

Avery came out with a smile that lit up her face. She had healed well but would forever bear the scars of the fire. "Sam, I'm glad you came."

"Me too." Sam nodded as they embraced.

"Come in," Avery said leading the way back into the house.

The house was light and bright in the true Greek Mediterranean style, the light bouncing off the tile floor and shining colorfully through the stained glass windows to the light plaster walls. The furniture was light wood and from their house was cooled by the gentle salty sea breeze. It was like a dream, a beautiful picturesque dream.

"Ethan! Come here real quick." Max called. A young almost teen came out of the dining room and Sam couldn't help but stare.

"Ethan, there's someone we'd like you to meet," Avery said, turning her son to face Sam who was rooted in the spot.

The boy was hitting his gangly stage but still had a rounder face than a man. His eyes were crystal blue like the sea you could see through the windows. His hand was a sandy brown like it couldn't decide if it wanted to be light or dark. His face was covered in freckles from the hot Mediterranean sun. And when he smiled it looked like innocence.

And it was Riley. So much Riley. His crinkles around his eyes, his stride, his face even. It was like looking at his best friend years younger. And it struck Sam dumb as the child came over.

"Hi. I'm Ethan. Who are you?" Ethan asked and goodness, it sounded like Riley too.

For a moment Sam wasn't sure he could answer, it felt like emotions, and tears were going to choke him right then and there as he looked at the boy that was the manifestation of his late best friend.
He couldn't do it, he just couldn't.

But then he smiled and leaned a little back and stuck out his hand for Ethan to shake, "I'm Sam. I knew your father."

Please tell me what you think!

And that wraps up Avery and Sam's story! I hope you had a fun time reading as I did writing!
