Sam - 20

Cont...

Sam found Bucky sitting almost like a guard in Steve's room. That was saying something since Steve's room was still in the hospital wing and Bucky loathed hospitals with every fiber of his being.
Every loud noise made him twitch and if any strong odor came he'd squeeze his eyes shut to try and block it out. The fact his own leg was in a dysfunctional boot didn't help matters either. Bucky had settled with fiddling with his knives to calm his nerves, something that had scared more than a few nurses and forced Sam to explain it twice now to the security men.

Sam knocked on the metal doorframe before stepping in, "You want anything?"

"No," Bucky answered almost rudely.

Sam sighed, he knew the man didn't mean to be so standoffish but it still made the man a colossal pain to try and get to know. It was just constant nerves. He'd talked Shuri into letting him see some of Barnes' brain scans. There were a lot of disconnects. Like an exposed nerve out there unable to be protected. It didn't excuse the behavior but it did explain it.

"How's Avery?" Bucky asked in the same monotone almost rudeness. The fact he was asking was progress in and of itself.

"Last time I checked, asleep," Sam reported watching the monitors hooked to Steve.

"Not anymore, just woke up. She's on the phone right now." Tony's voice made Sam jump. He still wasn't full rid of the prey instinct of running when Tony was around.

Bucky switched out the knife for a pen when Tony came in not even stopping to look, "And?"

"She'll have some burn scars but the glass wasn't too deep. The blood loss was the only real problem." Tony said leaning against the door frame, "How's he?"

"Healing. He hasn't eaten in a week and with his metabolism that's a problem. He's got three broken ribs, a few other notable fractures, and a boatload of internal bleeding they had to fix. He'll be fine in the long run. Probably will have to hold off on jumping out of planes for a few weeks though." Bucky rattled off as the pen danced across his knuckles.

"And your leg?" Tony asked.

Bucky blinked, breaking out of his trance for a moment in surprise and shock, "Fine." The pen fumbled and wobbled for a moment, "Thanks."

"By the way, I think Avery wanted to talk with you when she was done with her call," Tony said, turning from Bucky to Sam.

"Oh, okay. Did she say how long?" Sam acknowledged.

"Nope and I didn't ask," Tony said unhelpfully.

Sam resisted rolling his eyes or glaring and rose, "Well I'll go see what she needs." It did cross his mind how bad an idea it would be to leave those three in the same room unsupervised but there wasn't another solution and they were all adults. So against his better judgment, he turned and left to find Avery.
