Sam - 7

Cont...

It took a while to explain the situation to Avery and Max both of who were less than thrilled but begrudgingly willing to help. Something about this making them even.

Avery took the hard drive and led them to her personal space plugging in the drive and taking five minutes to immobilize it before doing a backtrace and find out exactly what it could do and who could make it. It was a solid ten minutes of her speaking in terms that flew over both Sam and Bucky's heads.

It boiled down to it being created for the US government to try and break the internet wall between China and the West. It had backfired massively. It broke through alright, it broke through everything. It had no "off switch" so it just kept going unless you could give it something to "chew on'' long enough to contain it. It was supposed to be locked in a US vault but somehow it had slipped out and fallen into the hands of the enemy.

The matter of finding Steve was a little more tricky but they could tentatively say he was in Ireland. But with it being winter and storms constantly rolling in getting a solid trace was near impossible at this distance without attracting attention.

"Well, there you go. That's as much as I can do." Avery said looking at the red dot on the digital map she had pulled up. A small island off the coast of Ireland that was currently taking a beating from its third massive storm of that month.

"Thanks, Av. You've helped a ton," Sam said rising with Bucky.

"Wait, what are you planning to do? You can't just walk in there, the weather alone will make it a challenge and there's no way onto the island other than by plane. You'll get yourself killed." Max said, sounding scandalized.

"We'll figure it out," Bucky said firmly. Weather, of all things, wasn't going to stop him from getting on that miserable rock for his brother.

"He's right, they've strategically thought their position out, you won't get anywhere near that shore before you end up dead," Avery said softly, turning to them in her chair.

"Well, I don't exactly have another option here. My friend's down there. If we don't go now he'll end up dead sooner or later." Sam snapped.

"Sam, you never think before you do. If you end up dead you'll be of no help to your friend." Max said sharply.

"Well if I don't go now he definitely will be!" Sam snapped, turning for the door, "Why do you care anyway?"

"Because you're a hothead! You're jumping headfirst into something you have only a bare idea of. It's suicide. We may not like you but we aren't about to let you be this reckless." Avery said, rising.

"Oh, that's rich. You are the same woman that broke just about every rule in the book on our missions?" Sam growled coming around.

"For you! You do before thinking through what could happen and it gets people killed!" Avery cried.

Sam deflated instantly, "That's not fair."

"Not fair? NOT FAIR?!? We both know he would have done anything for you. And you used that. Not fair is the fact you didn't tell me. Not fair is the fact that Max and I took the fall for you. Not fair is the fact I have a twelve-year-old son at home who doesn't have a father! That's not fair." Avery burst practically screaming.

Sam was reeling, "What?"

"You didn't have the ring on your finger Wilson. You do the math. Life's not fair. You can go throw away your life if you want but you're going to do it with the blinders off." Avery came closer and much quieter after her outburst. She pushed past him walking towards the door.

Sam turned around gaping in shock, "I didn't know!"

"Would it have mattered?" Avery asked quietly, turning a bit so they could see each other. The question wasn't said in malice or anger or accusing just sadness but Sam looked like he'd been slapped.
