Sam - 6

Cont...

They touched down in Greece and with Max leading made their way to a cliffside by noon.

"Now where?" Bucky asked tugging on his glove not wanting to expose his new arm to the elements for wind and biting saltwater.

"Down," Max said simply coming to the side and climbing down. Sam and Bucky shared a look before following. They climbed down till they reached a cave just above the waves of high tide. It was fairly dry as they can in.

"Now what?" Bucky defended his gut not liking it one bit.

"We're here," Max said moving some stones over in the corner.

Sam looked around the cave as Max worked, "It's different than your normal cover."

"Well, when the government decides to basically ban people of unique skill sets people have to get creative." Max huffed standing and came over to Sam.

There was deep rumbling and the back of the cave began to shift. Max turned suddenly and jabbed his finger into Sam's chest, "Let's get one thing clear, you're here as a courtesy. Do anything, hurt her, and you'll be swimming."

Sam held his gaze and nodded, "Got it."

The back of the cave receded to reveal a pristine white chamber with a  frosted glass wall running on one wall and the rock that currently wasn't there as the other wall. They stepped in and the rock shifted back to close them in the room.

Once the rocks were down one of the glass panes lifted to reveal a bright white hall. Max came forward and scanned his hand before the door at the end of the hall opened.

Directly in front, there was a receptionist counter with one guard that looked up at their arrival, "Welcome back red bird. I wasn't expecting you back until next month."

"Change of plans, I need two entrance passes," Max said signing a roster that sat on the desk.

The man behind the counter looked up with the paperwork in one hand and did a double-take, "What is he doing here?"

Bucky thought for a moment he had been recognized but then he realized the man was looking at Sam, who was shifting on his feet, not him.

"He wants to see the boss." Max said, taking paperwork from the receptionist whose tag read, "Anthony."

"The boss? The boss'll kill him." Anthony sputtered.

"Tell him that," Max mumbled handing the paperwork back.

Bucky looked over to Sam who was taking it in stride. They were acting like he wasn't there like he didn't exist. Bucky would have said something had Sam not caught his eye and shook his head puzzling Bucky even more.

Anthony chuckled looking over the papers before handing Mac two badges, "You are so going to get suspended."

Max grunted in agreement back before turning and handing Bucky and Sam ID badges, "Don't lose them."

Clipping them on they followed Max to an elevator. Stepping in Max punched in floor C and the metal box jerked upwards.

"I heard you had to go underground after Germany," Sam said as they traveled down.

"Yeah, and I heard you didn't get caught," Max responded, both icy and sarcastic. The doors slid open to reveal a bustling loud command center. Sam seemed shocked as they stepped out.

"Just because we've been forced underground doesn't mean we've shrunk in size," Max said with a smugness. They followed through the crowds to the other end of the command center, "There she is, now is like to see you explain this to her." Max said stopping a table away from a well put together woman who had her back to them a tablet in one hand talking with a coworker.

"That Avery?" Bucky asked quietly.

"Yeah," Sam said grimly watching the woman who still hadn't noticed them.

Avery was explaining something to the co-worker before turning towards them to do something else and looking up. When she saw Sam though she froze. Her face turned stony and stoic but anger and pain flashed as well. She pursed her lips and slowly came over putting her tablet down on the table she passed before walking up to them.

"Hey Av," Sam said softly.

Her frown depended but there was a flicker of pleasure at his greeting. Avery turned instead to Max, "You're suspended." She snapped, pushing past him and grabbing a phone from the cradle, "And you," Avery finally turned to Sam, "Better get out before my call into the Feds goes through."

Bucky could feel the blood drain from his face. Sam had said he trusted these people, people that were threatening to turn them in. He couldn't go back to captivity even if it was with the government his mind was still too vulnerable. He could feel his chest constricting, she wouldn't. The call went through and with his enhanced hearing he could hear a receptionist asking where the call was to go.

"Yes, Secretary-General Ross please, I'll hold," Avery said coldly looking back up to Sam with a dangerous expression.

"Avery, please, I need your help." Sam stepped forward.

"Yeah, I'll help you straight into a trial." Avery snapped back tilting the receiver so that it would muffle her voice.

"I need your expertise," Sam said quickly, holding out his hand to Bucky.

Bucky ejected the hard drive to hand to Sam and instantly screens began to fizz in and out glitching. Avery yanked the phone away from her ear as it let out a loud pitched whine, "What in the world?"

"We have a high-level intrusion! It's breaking down our firewalls!" Someone yelled. Avery dropped the phone and shoved paperwork off a desk taking a chair and attacked the computer.

 "It's everywhere!" Someone else said.

"Get ready to shut down the servers, I'm going to trick it into a Trojan box but it won't stay there long. We'll need to trap it once everything is off we can kill it." Avery said hands constantly moving over the keyboard. Max nodded and strolled across the room that was in chaos.

"Now!" Avery called instantly all the computers except hers shut off. She started muttering in what Sam deemed "computer."

After a moment the screen she was working on also fizzed out to black. Avery leaned back in her chair and looked over at them. Her eyes narrowed at the sight of the hard drive in Bucky's hand, "Where did you get that?"

"This?" Sam asked, frowning, taking the hard drive.

"That is an NSA level rewritten encryption algorithm. This should be locked in a vault and lost in time or better yet incinerated. Where. Did. You. Get. It?" Avery growled rising out of her chair.

"I stole it," Sam said in a rush.

"You STOLE it?" Avery asked in disbelief, "You stole an NSA level virus? I am so turning you in."

She reached for the phone again except Sam reached out and grabbed her hand still holding the phone, "I stole it from the Taliban."

Avery raised her eyebrow, "The Taliban?"

Sam nodded.

Avery dropped back into her chair leaned back and rubbed her face with her hands in disbelief before looking up at Sam, "You have my attention."
