Possibility of Tomorrow - 43

Cont...

Everett watches as they put his boss into a hulk proof cage and has a sudden flashback to watching them put James Barnes in a similar restraint two years ago. He looks over at the man in question, watching it all happen from a few feet away, arms wrapped around his daughter. "How'd you know he had hulk genetics?" Everett asks, coming over.

Darling shrugs, "Something he said. I did some digging. There's a big mess left from the Queen incident. Just had to look hard enough."

Bucky smiled at his daughter's words, but Everett could see something was tampering it, "You good?" Everett asks casually without thinking.

Bucky sends him a surprised look before shrugging, "Glad it's not me this time." He nodded towards the cage, which is getting wheeled away to a cargo container so that there's no damaging evidence for the public.

Everett winced, "Yeah, sorry about that."

"Don't be. The past is the past. Not like we can change it. Took me a long time to figure that out." Bucky shook his head.

Everett nodded, he never in a million years would have thought that he would be thinking this, but man, did this guy have a point, "Yeah. Well, you both should be getting official pardons soon since Ross's arrest will overturn the Accords. I'll be in touch."

They both nodded as he turned to walk away but stopped. This might be the last time they were able to talk on this matter, and Ross had been dying to ask one question since two years ago when he first saw Barnes. "If you don't mind me asking," Everett asked, turning back around. They both looked at him with interest. "How do you have such calm no matter what happens?" Everett came back over. "Even back then, you were very calm despite what was happening."

Bucky nodded, "I realized something back then. Two things, actually. One, there was nothing they could do that hadn't been done before. There's no fear if you know you're relatively safe."

"And?" Everett asked, trying not to think about what the first point implied.

"And second, I had hope. Hope does a lot to bring you peace." Bucky nodded.

"Hope in what?" Everett asked, confused. Hope wasn't something that he'd correlate with Bucky Barnes.

Bucky smiled and shared a look with his daughter, who smiled back. "Hope that tomorrow is better, better than today." Darling said, "Anything can happen tomorrow. There's hope in that."

"Hope that there's something after this. That that time is better after." Bucky added, nodding, "As long as you have hope, it is possible to have calm."

Hope that tomorrow is better than today or yesterday. What a nice thought. Everett nodded, "Thanks." He turned to go.

"Agent Ross?" Darling said, making him turn again, "Thank you. And good luck."

Everett nodded, looking at the girl and her father, both looking happier than he'd ever seen them. No matter what came of this investigation, it was worth it Everrt decided, "You're welcome. And you too."
