Possibility of Tommorow - 9

Cont...

They landed in Algiers the next day, disembarking into the shady side of town. It turned out that Darling was pretty helpful and didn't have to be told to check for cameras or security teams.

Nat picked up work for them that night. A group of insurgents bringing drugs into the country. They would get enough money for a month and a half. Sam would be able to refill the med bag and Wanda a ticket for a destination unknown.

Darling was left at the "safe house" while they went to go take care of it.

It had gone from bad to worse. The drug dealers were on high alert. They had been tipped off that someone was coming for their business.

They had gotten past the first two waves of insurgents easily. The third wave got in a lucky shot knocking Wanda out. Things went downhill from there.

Bucky's nest got found, leaving him to fight off his attackers and leaving them with no cover. Sam's wings shorted out, grounding him and getting rid of any backup they had left.

They had been fine until one of the insurgents realized that Wanda wasn't dead. Grabbing her limp body, he pressed a gun against her temple. The message was clear through the language barrier.

They surrendered after that, but there were only a few left. They had dwindled the number down to a manageable number of only they weren't holding Wanda hostage.

They were all hustled inside the house and shoved to the ground. There were some language barriers, but the questions were run in the mill. "Who hired you?" "How many are there?" "How much were you paid?"

Nat was able to overcome the language barrier, which was a good thing because it was Steve who heard the commotion first.

He had thought it was Bucky at first breaking in to save them. But the sounds were a little too loud, not perfect, not professional. They were still very quiet; only Steve could hear them.

He snapped back to the one-room house when a gun got pointed at his head as Nat was loudly talking to the insurgents. Just when his day couldn't get any worse. At least they had released Wanda.

The argument in the foreign language got louder and faster. Steve didn't know the language, but he was going to go with not good. He watched the man closely; maybe he could throw himself out of the way of the bullet? If he had enough warning, that was. At least he would minimize the damage to any important organs, hopefully.

The situation was cut short when the door crashed in. The head insurgent swung from Steve towards the new arrival before getting popped twice in the chest. The two remaining insurgents went down close after.

Don't get him wrong, Steve was immediately relieved and thankful, but shock kinda overrode that. "Darling?!"

"You were supposed to stay at the safe house!" Nat scolded.

Darling stood kicking the door closed, "Would you rather I let him shoot you?"

Steve huffed in response, choosing not to fight that battle right now as Darling cut them all free. Sam took a quick look at Wanda and concluded that she had a minor concussion. Steve picked her up while Nat and Sam armed themselves again.

Darling looked around at all the AK-47s and hunting knives before going for the staff in the corner. It stood a good foot above her and at the end was a scythe.

"Now you look like the Grim Reaper." Sam huffed, pulling his useless wings back on.

"Is that a bad thing?" Darling asked.

Sam chuckled, "No, no, it really isn't."

"We're clear. There should only be two more insurgents." Nat came over.

Steve grabbed his earpiece from her, "Buck, you good?"

"Some bruises but good," Bucky responded.

"Alright, we're coming out. Wanda is out. Cover us until we're out." Steve picked Wanda up like she weighed nothing. With Nat and Sam covering him, Steve exited the building. They kept to the shadows as they skirted around the buildings out of sight. There was a thwack and then a thump.

 "One down," Bucky reported.

"One left," Nat murmured.

They kept going, headed for what was left of the entrance. There was a flash of metal, and Steve dove behind a wall taking Sam and Nat with him just before gunfire exploded.

"I have no shot!" Bucky called, sounding stressed.

"Where is he?" Sam gasp trying to find the source of the hail of bullets. There was a pause in the rain of hot metal, and Nat took the opening to send a few rounds over the wall. The response was more bullets.

"I got eight rounds left." Nat huffed.

"I don't have visual." Bucky's stressed voice came through.

"What'd ya wanna do? It's a shot in the dark." Sam asked, turning to Steve.

Steve groaned, trying to think. They were pinned. It was only a matter of time.

Abruptly the gunfire stopped. There was a crash and then quiet.

"Was that you?" Nat asked, poking her head out just enough to see.

"Negative. I still don't have a visual." Bucky sounded as confused as they were. They all slowly got up to find the courtyard empty.

"What in the world?" Nat looked around on guard.

"Go," Sam nodded at Steve and Nat, "I'll stay with her." Wanda laid in the dust, looking peaceful and still completely asleep.

Steve and Nat came forward across the courtyard to find the last insurgent laying on the ground in a pile of brass. In unison, both Nat and Steve looked up to find a machine gun set up on the roof.

"Do you usually get into this much trouble?" Darling's voice made them jerk around. Sam was right; she looked like the Grim Reaper in the black traditional head wrappings and scythe.

"You did this?" Nat asked.

"I'm pretty sure the fall killed him," Darling responded firmly.

Steve snorted, "Pull out. We're done for today."

They all walked back to the safe house. When Bucky saw Darling with her scythe, he laughed, "Of course. I should have guessed."

Panic flashed through Darling's face, "Did I do something wrong?"

Bucky rushed to correct her misconception, "No." He pointed at the scythe, "It suits you."

"That's a good thing, right?" Darling clarified.

"Yeah." Bucky smiled, putting an arm around her shoulder, "Yeah, it is."
