Sam - 10

Cont...

A storm to top all storms rolled in tossing the jet around like a rag doll as they made their approach.
The upside was the storm would cover their entrance the downside was Bucky was sure he was going to puke. Each creak and shudder of the jet made his anxiety skyrocket. Trying to control his heartbeat he rechecked his rifle and weapons for what felt like the hundredth time. Sam noticed but said nothing letting him regulate his anxiety.

"We're almost there. Get ready to drop." Max called as they got closer.

They all did final checks of gear before the back hatch opened. Avery had given in and had donned the other set of black wings.

"Once we're out get set for our getaway," Avery called to Max. He gave thumbs up and Avery turned to Sam, "Ready?"

"When you are." Sam nodded, pulling the hood up.

"Alright then," Avery said the flight goggles materializing over her eyes. She jumped out of the jet and before Bucky could talk himself out of plummeting a few thousand feet Sam grabbed his vest and jumped.

Then they were falling into the dark abyss stinging cold rain hitting them from every direction. They weren't out in it for more than thirty seconds before they were soaked to the skin. Falling, falling, falling in the darkness. They hurled downward finally seeing the base below. The winds and rain that battered them made it hard to aim for a flat space to land. They couldn't deploy yet without being seen they needed to get as close as physically possible to get under the radars.

Closer, closer, closer, until finally Sam and Avery activated their wings swooping up just in time to be under the radar spotlight and just over a slick but fairly flat roof. The wings disengaged and all three of them were left clinging to the slippery roof.

Sam unhooked Bucky from his suit and just like that with two feet on solid ground, he was in the zone. The storm had given perfect cover and no alarms had gone off meaning no one knew they were there.

"Get the charges set, I'll get in," Avery said over the roar of the angry ocean below.

Both men nodded and she scrambled away keeping low. Finding a way in took some looking but once Avery was in she evaporated most of the water from her suit, as to not leave a trace of her entrance. The joke back in the day was that she could walk through walls and she'd never been more proud of that talent in her life.

The base was an old castle that these terrorists had built over so taking a guess she headed towards the old dungeon. Finding an access point Avery was able to connect into the mainframe. Pulling up schematics she sent them to Sam and Bucky so they knew where to rendezvous. Then she pulled up the specs for the dungeon.

They had fit it with security cameras, heat sensors, pressure sensors, and lasers. Definite overkill. Looping the security feed took care of the cameras. Now to deal with everything else.

Finding a steam vent Avery unsealed it and began leveling the heat in the dungeon making the heat sensors useless. The rest she would have to deal with once down there. Sealing her suit she used the steam vent to get down.

Many people thought she was crazy for things like this, going through a vent no "normal people" would. Maybe she was, but normal was overstated, and this saved lives.

Coming to the end where the vent let out to the old dungeon she pulled herself so she was standing on her hands gripping the edge of the shaft parallel to the wall. Balancing on one hand she pulled out her signal scrambler and turned the floor off. The lasers would have to turned off manually with a buffer.

Flipping down Avery expertly cartwheeled and flipped through the moving grid before inserting the buffer into the laser command box after a moment they flicked off. Straightening Avery grinned at her work. No one knew she was here and she now knew what they were capable of.

Then she took a look around. Other than the high-level security nothing had been upgraded in the dark stone hall. It would be fringed if she hadn't spiked the heat. She needed to work fast or someone would notice.

Clicking on her flashlight she walked down the hall. The cells were empty and filthy. She almost thought she was misguided and Sam's friend wasn't down there when she finally found him.

He had curled his towering frame into as small a ball as possible in a dark corner of his cell. Digging in her pocket she pulled out lock picks. Avery was out of practice but it came back easy enough.
The door let out a loud creak that made her cringe when she pulled it open.

The sound caused the man to shoot awake. His blue eyes bore into her. He was in civilian clothing that was bloody and his eyes and cheeks were sunken like he'd been starved even though it had only been a few days.

Slowly she put her hands up so he could see them and came closer, "I'm here to get you out. I'm Avery, who are you?"

The man was clearly considering his options as he sat there letting her get closer, "I'm Steve. Who sent you?"

"I was told to tell you this was the last darn time they were dragging your punk butt out of anyone's clutches. On that note, I'm pretty sure they were joking but the scary one has a killer poker face." Avery said, stopping in front of him.

Steve smiled, his white teeth standing out against his filthy hair and skin, "About time."
