Bucky tried to rest, get ready for what was to come, he just couldn't.

Steve. Loving, kind, fearless Steve. The kid that didn't know when to run from a fight or when to back down, the kid that hated bullies with everything in him was a killer.

The best could break Bucky knew that. His own ordeal with Hydra made him wish all the more it had never happened.

Hydra had changed his best friend into a weapon. Changed the artist into a killer.

The scary thing was that Bucky had almost killed him. He was supposed to protect Steve, no matter what instead he'd almost killed him.

Bucky stared absentmindedly at the city from the rundown dam that had been converted into a bunker and allowed himself to fall back into another decade.

"We looked for you after. My folks wanted to drive you home." Bucky said walking after his best friend. They were both dressed in their Sunday best for the funeral they had just attended.

"Thank you but I needed to be alone," Steve said quietly.

"How was it?" Bucky asked equally as quiet as they went up the stairs towards Steve's apartment.

"It was good. She's next to dad." Steve said as they came up to the door.

Bucky read into it. This was hard for him. Sarah had been Steve's world. The woman had done everything in her power to give her son a shot at as normal a life he could get. They'd had a special bond and from it. Steve had complete respect for strong women. Her death would change him and Bucky was trying to reach out so he didn't lose Steve to his grief.

"So my folks wanted to offer you to come live with us," Bucky said, watching as Steve rummaged through his pockets for his key.

"That's very kind of them," Steve said, frowning as he came up empty for his key. His tone said no.

Bucky sighed, of course, he'd say no, the kid was stubborn as all get out. He kicked over the brick to the side of the door and retrieved the spare key from under it, "Come on it'll be fun like when we were kids. We’ll put some couch cushions on the floor all you gotta do is maybe shine up my shoes once in a while."

Steve took the key from Bucky, "Thank you, Buck, but I'll be fine on my own."

"Thing is," Bucky put his hand on his best friend's shoulder, "You don't have too. I'm with you till the end of the line. I always will be."

Steve had nodded slowly and eventually had agreed to move into the Barnes household.

That had been a lifetime ago before the war, before the plane, before things got complicated. How could he have given up? Let go? There was only one course of action now. It didn't make anything easier.

"He's gonna be there ya know." Sam's voice brought Bucky back to the here and know.

"I know." It hurt but he knew. Steve was Hydra's best bet to stop him.

"The guy he was and the guy he is now." Sam hesitated as he stopped next to Bucky, "He's not someone you save, he's someone you stop."

Bucky felt his anger flair but knew Sam told it like it was, "then this might be the one I don't get out of."

"He doesn't remember you." Sam pointed out sounding shaken that Bucky didn't think he could walk out of this one.

Bucky thought back to the moment before the car exploded and their eyes had met. The confusion that had clouded them and the recognition. "He will."

He had to. Either he remembered or they would both die. If they failed Hydra would no longer need the Winter Soldier, he'd be disposed of.

Bucky turned and walked away, "We're going to war. If you want out Sam, now or never."
