WS AU - 5

Cont...

His alarm clock hadn't gone off. Granted he always woke up at 6:30 am on the dot due to the Army but he had wanted an extra hour of exercise before he got called in randomly.

The Mall was normally empty at this time that was where James headed. He had learned how to use his enhanced body to his advantage over the years and that was why he ran as early as he could. He was fast, like inhuman fast. That attracted attention.

He was surprised when he passed another runner, "On your right."

The man huffed in response. The sun was lighting the cityscape with a pale morning light when James passed him again, "On your right."

"Oh my right, got it." The man mumbled out.

The day was fully upon them when James came upon the man again. The black man heard him coming this time, "Don't say it! Don't say it!"

James flew past him grinning, "On your right."

 "Come on!" The man wheezed-yelled.

James chuckled. Two laps later he found the man leaning against a tree holding his side.
"How's the slowpoke?" James joked.

"You just ran a marathon in like thirty minutes. And here I am needing a new set of lungs." The man shot back holding out his hand.

James pulled him up, "Well I got a late start. James Barnes."

"Oh shame on you then. Sam Wilson. Have we met? I recognize the name." The man wheezed out.

James chuckled even though the smile didn't reach his eyes, "I'm sure it'll click eventually. Where'd you serve?"

"Paratroopers, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, the whole shebang. Now I'm working up at the VA. You?" Sam listed off.

"Army, but that was a long time ago," James replied purposely being vague.

"You still get the dreams though right?" Sam asked.

James winced at the truth of the statement. Every night, if it wasn't that fateful day, it was the captivity, and if it wasn't that, it was the faces through the scope. He'd served yes but he'd also killed in a way that was both detached and intimate way, both close and far. He saw faces when he slept, not people. "Yeah. It's been years, I still have them bad."

Sam nodded in understanding, "If you ever need to talk hit me up at the VA or just come around make me look real good to the gal at the front desk."

James laughed, "All right all right." His phone dinged and he fished it out of his pocket. Natasha telling him he was needed for another op. There was never any warning more than a text that gave him five minutes of prep time.
"Well I got to go but good running with you if that's what you call running." James teased.

Sam scoffed, "So that's how it is? You're the one that started late."

James chuckled headed to the curb as Natasha pulled up, "Oh, that's how it is."

Nat rolled down the window spewing out her joke about the Smithsonian and fossils like she always did.

James rolled his eyes, yanking the door open, "Never heard of what you speak but you seen my ride, lass? She's the fire head that's don't know how to shut up." They could both hear Sam crackling behind them as they bickered.

James looked over at the laughing man, "Ya can't run everywhere." He heard Natasha scoff. James probably could if he wanted to but it was unrealistic.

Sam grinned, "No you can't." He leaned over to look at Natasha, "How ya doing?"

Natasha flashed her telltale flirting smile, "Hey."

James rolled his eyes at both of them, "Get a room. Drive."

With another grin at Sam, Natasha floored it and they flew off.
